Germany is quite a clean country compared to almost anywhwere else. So is the interesting question whether or not the Germans are also a clean folk? Those taking a stroll following a warm summer evening may have their doubts.
Actually local authorities invest heavily in cleaning up. They also bill much of the cost to private and commercial property owners, who naturally pass much of the tab on to their tennants where they can.
And yes, whist a few do partake of the habit of leaving their rubbish behind, tossing stuff out of the car window, throwing their cigarette stubs on the sidewalk and leaving thier dog's doings right where they were deposited, the vast majority are respectful.
In general, interest in all aspects of ecology is very widespread in this society. People posess high awareness and most children are taught early to be particularly concientious. The CO2 debate is not an easy topic in any nation and the ecology versus motoring equation is as controversially debated here as elsewhere. But that's another topic.
